All-male preserve.

For the third year in succession the Open is being held at an all-male golf club.

Royal Troon will this week follow in the footsteps of Sandwich and Muirfield and the rules and regulations do not stop there.

Juniors are not allowed to play on the main course until they are 16, even if their name happens to be Colin Montgomerie and their father is secretary of the club at the time.

Montgomerie, who is still a member of the club where his father James was secretary until 1997, insisted with the hint of a knowing smile he had never dared break the rules and sneak on to the course before he turned 16.

"The previous secretary was a real hard nut!" joked Montgomerie. "You never break rules around these type of places and I was not prepared to do it either. The children's course has a rather large exhibition tent on it this week and that is where I played up until the age of about 12.

"Then I moved on to the Troon Portland course, which is the practice ground area this week, which is actually the ladies' club here. And then you transferred to the main course, the old course we all call it."

Europe's golfers played their part in Sport Relief by raising pounds 42,000 during the Red Bull Final 5 competition recently.
