All the presidents' gen; PICK OF THE DAY INSIDE THE WHITE HOUSE Channel 5, 9pm.
IT'S the most famous address in America, has been home to 42 Presidents and is the scene where some of the most iconic moments in history have played out.
It's a work place, ahome and a museum, hosting thousands of visitors every day, including many of the most famous figures of all time. And it has been blown up by aliens and taken over by terrorists (well, in films, anyway).
The White House, at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, is one of the most recognisable buildings on the planet. And this fascinating documentary tells the story of its origins in the 1790s through to the present day.
It features interviews with some of its most famous inhabitants, including the current occupiers - Barack and Michelle Obama - plus former Presidents and First Ladies, including Jimmy Carter and Barbara Bush, and White House staff, plus high profile journalists as well as TV news anchors.
As Michelle Obama said in her recent speech, much of the original White House was built using slave labour, before Abraham Lincoln signed the bill to abolish slavery in his office in that very building.
The documentary shows all the different parts, including the famous West Wing, which was added to create more working space and to house the press corps. There are contributions from people who were right at the heart of some of the biggest moments in American history, witnessing the Presidents' reactions to things like wars and the bombing of Pearl Harbour, and being present when JFK's body was brought home.
And we see Barack Obama sitting at the centre of American politics, in the Oval Office, behind the desk which was a gift from Queen Victoria.Just try not to think about who might be there from November...
