All resources being utilized to control Hunza lake: CM GB.

ISLAMABAD, May 15, 2010 (Balochistan Times): Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Syed Mehdi Shah has said all available resources are being utilized to control the situation arisen due to creation of Hunza lake and there is no chance of its bursting. In a telephonic conversation with PTV, Mehdi shah said special committees were working. Spillway at the natural lake formed at Atta Abad due to landsliding, which blocked Hunza River, had been completed and chances of any dangerous situation had been reduced to a large extent. We are fully alert. All is set to deal with any situation. Special camps for internally displaced persons (IDP) have been set up. All arrangements for drinking water, shelter and security have been made besides storage of food items, medicines and other material, he added. I along with Governor Gilgit-Baltistan Dr. Shama Khalid and two other advisors took an aerial view of the entire area to assess the situation on Friday. Natural lake is making its place upward and we were told by the concerned department that there is no chance of its collapse. If unfortunately something happens, we are ready to face the situation and all arrangements have been finalized, the CM said. There should be no fear and panic as situation is under control, he added. He said the Pakistan Army with the help of civil administration was carrying out relief operation. Syed Mehdi Shah said by the grace of Almighty Allah everything would be under control within next few days. To a question he said, We are on the task from the day first. Due to some unavoidable circumstances ground work could not be started immediately. Now a 22 feet wide and 30 feet deep spillway has been prepared. To a question he said, if water outbursts it would not be harmful for Tarbella dam. All the concerned departments have been taken on board, he added. To another question he said maximum facilities were being provided to the affectees through helicopters. We are doing utmost efforts to provide relief to the affected people with limited resources, he added. He called it a natural calamity and appealed to the people to pray to Allah Almighty for help to overcome the situation. The federal government is taking much interest in the matter and has promised to give every possible help in overcoming the crisis, he added.
