Alcatel has launched a successor to the Alcatel 1000 ASAM ATM subscriber access multiplexer.

The new ASAM will initially support up to five times the number of lines that the current generation product supports with the support increasing to almost ten times in the near future.

Other features include a density of 432 multi-mode ADSL lines per rack, a low power consumption of 1.6 watts per ADSL line and new ATM functionality providing support for multiple quality-of-service classes as well as for all key industry-standard DSL services such as multi-mode ADSL.

The new Alcatel ASAM will be available in May. No price was disclosed.
