Alcan Recycling announces cans for habitat results.
Alcan employees from 13 different U.S. sites collected and recycled nearly 1 million aluminum beverage cans from September 1, 2003, through America Recycles Day, November 15, 2003.
"Alcan's aluminum can recycling campaign is a great success story for recycling, aluminum and Habitat for Humanity--the value of the aluminum and the corporate match raised over $30,000 that will benefit thirteen Habitat affiliates," Martha Finn Brooks, senior vice president of Alcan Inc. and president and CEO of Alcan Rolled Products Americas and Asia, says. "Aluminum is the perfect metal for a project like this because it is the most valuable recycled beverage packaging material, earning up to 20 times more for its collection than other types of packaging."
The Alcan Berea, Ky., Recycling Plant. received the $5,000 grand prize for its local Habitat affiliate. Employees and members of the Berea community collected the most cans with 5,700 pounds. Alcan locations in Terre Haute, Ind., and Richmond, Va., will also receive an additional $1,000 donation for their local Habitat affiliates in light of their creative promotional efforts. Collection and volunteer activities included partnering with various local community groups, businesses, waste management organizations and even an NFL team.
