AIRSHIP: Stuck In The Ocean. The Manchester band has spent two years lovingly crafting this debut. They clearly wanted it to be right and it is from the bang and crash opener to the melodic walls of noise they skilfully construct. Some of the tracks have deft hooklines - especially the wave-style ebb and flow to the chorus on Invertebrate and the organic soaring urgency on current single Algebra - while the ambient feel to the guitars on Kids suddenly explode into hefty guitar punches that deliver that vital knockout blow. Morrissey himself could have had a hand in this one. A band that progresses the city's phenomenal music tradition.

BOMBAY CYCLE CLUB: A Different Kind Of Fix. Sonic indie pop that tries hard to be not of this earth and manages that laudable aim as we trip off from shimmering guitars through soft white noise to the most intriguing moment of all, a joyful, danceable knees-up of current single Shuffle that even gets a banjo involved.

VARIOUS: 12'' 80s Alternative. Some very well-known and others less well-known stuff including New Order, Soft Cell, Tears For Fears, Killing Joke, Spear Of Destiny, Simple Minds, Big Country and Julian Cope.
