Kathi Ember's warm drawings enhance the story from Pat Miller, Substitute Groundhog (0807576433), telling of a young groundhog who gets sick the day before Groundhog Day and is told by Dr. Owl to stay in bed. His search for a substitute groundhog leads to a new assessment of his many unique qualities to fit the job description in this fun story. Moira Rose Donohue's ALFIE THE APOSTROPHE (0807502553, $16.95) tells of an apostrophe who longs to make it into the punctuation-mark talent show. There's lots of competition among the other punctuation marks--and to make things worse the show's director has mistaken Alfie for a comma! JoAnn Adinolfi's whimsical drawings enhance a fine story elementary-level readers will find both entertaining and educational.
