Albert Bierstadt: Art and Enterprise.

This is a comprehensive look at the art and life of one of the greatest recorders of the American West... indeed, one of the major landscape painters of the nineteenth century. Best known for his panoramic views of the west, yet almost forgotten as an important American artist, this book presents the first opportunity to study the full range of Bierstadt's considerable achievement as a painter. Published in conjunction with a major exhibit of Bierstadt's works organized by the Brooklyn Museum and the National Gallery of Art, eighty-seven of Bierstadt's finest works are reproduced in color. the book also includes a number of oil sketches of animals and landscape forms, numerous black-and-white drawings and prints, extensive quotes from the critics of his day, and reproductions of a number of surprisingly good photographs taken by Bierstadt in the 1850s. The enterprise term in the subtitle attains significance through the author's investigation of Bierstadt's promotion of his large landscapes through the use of theatrical presentations, and through his use of emerging technological advances in photography and chromolithography in the reproduction and marketing of prints of his paintings. Not an inexpensive publication, but of value as one the most in-depth efforts to understand and assess this important genre of American art. The Bierstadt exhibit continues at the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. through February 17, 1992.
