Alaskan Brewing expands to Seattle

The Alaskan Brewing & Bottling Co. of Juneau, AK, recently received the necessary licensing to expand their sales into Washington state, and has announced expansion of their products to the Seattle area, beginning in the fall of 1990.

"We are, first and foremost, a beer for Alaskans," said Geoff Larson, co-founder and co-owner, Alaska Brewing. "Our primary objective will always be to meet the demand from our Alaskan market first. The expansion to Seattle will simply allow us to even out the peaks and valleys in our yearly production schedule."

In response to phone requests from consumers in Seattle, many liquor stores in Alaska already ship cases of Alaskan beer to individuals in the greater Seattle area. The cost of purchasing a case of Alaskan and shipping it Seattle is about $80, Larson said.

"We look forward to joining the competitive environment in Seattle's specialty beer market," Mary Larson, co-founder explained. "The demand for Alaskan in Seattle affirms our belief that we have a great product."

Along those lines, the Larsons also recently announced the introduction of Alaska Brewing Co.'s winter seasonal beer.

The 1990 Winter Stock Ale is brewed as an India Pale Ale.

A higher than average alcohol content and an abundant dose of bittering hops provided the necessary preservative qualities that ensured the beer would survive the voyage around the Horn of Africa. The same distinctive flavor and fortitude make the Winter Stock reminiscent of this era.

Klages pale malt give this seasonal its rich golden color. The clean bitterness, characteristic of this style, comes from a rare new hybrid hop that is usually unavailable to commercial brewers. Small amounts of Hallertau, Cascade and Chinook hops add to the refreshing bitterness and combine to create a spicy, floral aroma.

Alaskan Brewing Co. produced its first beer in 1986. The Juneau company brews and bottles two types of beer and three seasonal beers under the name Alaskan.
