Alabama's Gadsden State Community College biology Instructor Philip Shider and Kaci Rodgers, gross anatomy lab supervisor, recently participated in an exclusive course offered by the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society Institute. The course, "Anatomy of the Nervous System," was conducted at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. The main objective of the course was to teach human cadaver dissection of the brain, cranial nerves, spinal cord and brachial plexus (nerves between the neck and armpit that control most of the arm). The course was composed of online exams and assignments, as well as onsite dissection. Snider and Rodgers were excited to participate in this course because the brachial plexus is a part of the nervous system they have been eager to study in depth. Both gained valuable hands-on experience in Gadsden State's gross anatomy (cadaver) lab since its opening in 2008 which gave them an edge on the other participants The final project for the course will be a collaborative effort between Snider and Rodgers on the brachial plexus that will be completed and subrratted at the beginning of September. This fall, Gadsden State students enrolled in Biology 271--haman gross anatomy/pathophysiology--will get to see the project first-hand, and it will be accessible to other members of HAPS on the organization's website. Funds for the professional development opportunity were pro vided by a US Department of Education Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Project grant
