Defending champions Al Sadd Club lifted their game in the final quarter and Alpha Bangura's massive 42 pushed them to record an easy 84-71 victory against Al Shamal during the Qatar Basketball League at Al Rayyan Club Indoor Hall.

In their opening match of the second round on Wednesday, the holders averaged almost 10 points in every five minutes. But as Al Shamal threatened with a spirited recovery to narrow down the margin at the end of the third quarter, they suddenly stepped up on the gas and sealed the win, their eighth in 10 matches in the season.

With three (Abulai Jalloh, Khalid Suliman Abdi and Sd Abdulrahman) of the core players absent, Al Sadd still managed to stamp their class.

Scoring from the paint and turn-overs was the chief reason for Al Sadd's victory and at one stage, the winners enjoyed a healthy 21-point lead too.

Bangura's big tally came through 63 percent field goal scoring success - 17 from 27. He was steady from the charity line conversion, getting 7 out of 9 shots in. Together with Erfan Ali Saeed, who had 18, they accounted for 60 points, which swung the match in Al Sadd's favour.

Huffman Jonthan and Brian McKenzie were the main fighters for Al Shamal, chipping in 21 each. Jonthan posted 13 rebounds as well to help his team gain a 43-34 edge. Williams Tyvon had 14 points along with 7 assists.

In another match, current league leaders Al Rayyan recorded their 10th victory of the season as they crushed Al Ahli Club by 104-70, leading by 50-24 at the half-time. Out-of-the-arc shooting was the main source of their victory and Rayyan sunk in 15 out of 24 shots.

Jermareo Davidson scored 19, Jurica Zuza netted 16, Mohamed Hassan Mohamed got 15 with 11 assists, Malek Seleem secured 14 and captain Yaseen Musa Ismail earned 13. Point guard Boney Watson had 12 assists and 7 points.

Al Rayyan were so dominant in the match that they were 44 points ahead during the fourth quarter.

Alvin Mofunanya had match-high figures of 24. Ndyae Hassino and Barsiyak Vitti Moto gained 15 each.
