Airport plan; britain ROUND-UP.

LONDON Mayor Boris Johnson is considering plans to build a new airport in the Thames estuary as an alternative to further expansion of Heathrow.

Officials in City Hall are preparing to undertake a feasibility study to examine the possibility of creating a 24-hour airport on an artificial island off the Isle of Sheppey in Kent.

The scheme is being seen as a potential answer to the controversy surrounding Heathrow's enlargement with a third runway.

However, the ambitious proposals are likely to concern environmental groups.
