Alitalia canceled about half its flights scheduled for today owing to two separate 8-hr. strikes called by trade unions representing Italian air traffic controllers and Alitalia flight attendants. In a statement, the carrier said the 394 cancellations will involve national and international flights in almost equal proportion. May 22, 2007

BA Goes Green on the Ground As part of its move to London Heathrow's Terminal 5 in March 2008, British Airways is investing in a new fleet of 550 airport vehicles that include baggage tractors, loading equipment and passenger buses, which will help reduce ground emissions emitted by the airline. British Airways is considering all business class flights on routes between the United States and continental Europe, its chief executive said on Monday, as the carrier looks to tap the lucrative end of the expanding transatlantic market. Europe's second-biggest airline by traffic is considering such services as a way to take high-margin business from rivals Air France-KLM and Lufthansa, as the market for flights between the United States and European Union opens up next year. SAS Scandinavian

The Swedish arm of Scandinavian airline SAS said on Sunday it would cancel flights for the fourth day on Monday due to a strike by cabin crew. SAS, which has said the strike threatens its turnaround plan, first cancelled and grounded most of its flights in and out of Sweden on Friday due to disagreement with the HTF union over new working conditions for cabin crew. SAS has said it would lock out striking crew from May 28. The two sides failed to reach a deal on working conditions in areas such as breaks for rest and food for the 800 Sweden-based cabin crew. SAS Scandinavian

Scandinavian carrier SAS said a continuing dispute with one of it unions forced the cancelation of more domestic and international flights to and from Sweden on Saturday. The airline said that negotiations with its Salaried Employees Association over hours and working conditions had reached stalemate. TUIfly

TUIfly will increase capacity for the upcoming winter schedule by 12% year-over-year, operating 240 weekly flights from 17 German airports to 48 destinations in 15 countries. Grenoble will be a new destination. TUIfly is expecting to transport 13.5 million passengers this year. May 22, 2007
