Saudi Arabia's National Air Services (NAS) has signed agreements with Airbus to buy 38 A320 aircraft worth at least 9 billion riyals (USD$2.4 billion). Airbus said on Friday it had signed a letter of intent with NAS to buy 20 A320s. Qatar Airways, Airbus

Qatar Airways became the largest customer for Airbus's A350 XWBs at the show with an order for 80 aircraft, but has been frustrated by the airframer's tardiness in providing detailed and reliable specification and performance data for the new twinjet. The order for the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-powered twinjets comes two years after Qatar Airways announced its original commitment for the aircraft - then with General Electric GEnx engines. The Doha-based airline - which currently operates a large, all-Airbus fleet but is soon to add its first Boeing 777-300ER - retains its position as launch operator from mid-2013, but its chief executive Akbar Al Baker told Flight International he had been frustrated by the lack of detailed information that Airbus has been providing during negotiations: "For a launch customer we have been provided with remarkably limited information on the evolution of the A350 XWB design. Qatar Airways, Airbus, Boeing

Qatar Airways' decision to split its widebody expansion program between Airbus and Boeing comes after long-running negotiations with Airbus about its launch deal for the A350 - a commitment first announced at Paris two years ago for the original version of the twinjet (then powered by GEnx engines) which the airline was due to receive from mid-2010 as the first operator. The revelation, which last week still had not been confirmed by the airline, comes less than a month after Qatar Airways signed a firm deal for 80 Airbus A350 XWBs at the Paris air show, following two years of negotiations. Qatar Airways, Boeing

Long-standing rumors that Qatar Airways intends to split its widebody expansion between the Airbus A350 XWB and Boeing 787 were confirmed at the last week's rollout ceremony in Everett, when the airline's motif appeared among the customer logos that adorned the twinjet's fuselage. Qatari flag carrier's 787 deal comprises a firm order for 30 787s for delivery from mid-2010, with options for a further 30. The whole deal has an estimated value of around $10 billion. Sources say that the order, which is mainly for 787-8s but also includes 787-9s, was placed in April and has been held on the US manufacturer's books as an undisclosed customer. The General Electric GEnx is understood to have been selected over the rival Rolls-Royce Trent 1000. Jul 8, 2007

Qatar Airways, Boeing

Qatar Airways' chief executive on Wednesday declined to discuss whether the Gulf-based carrier has ordered Boeing's 787 Dreamliners. An order for 30 787s, worth almost USD$5 billion at list prices, was recorded on Boeing's online order book in April, attributed to an unidentified customer. People familiar with the deal have said Qatar Airways was the buyer, but the airline has not confirmed the order. Jun 28, 2007
