Assistive technology service company Aira reported on Friday the launch of a new initiative to provide free service through the Aira Employment Programme effective 20 February 2018, to address and assist job seekers who are blind or with low vision currently seeking employment.
According to estimates, the unemployment rate in the blind community is as high as 70%. The company is offering free service for job-seekers as they navigate employment sites, fill out applications and build resumes, as well as travel to and from meetings with prospective employers. The first 100 Aira Explorers to secure job interviews will have their transport covered through the company's partnership with Lyft.
Using Aira's video stream, GPS and web data, the agents offer live, on-demand assistance to people who are blind or visually impaired.
The leaders of the National Federation of the Blind, which is the oldest nationwide organization of blind Americans, the American Council of the Blind, which is at the forefront of the creation of policies as well as the American Foundation for the Blind, which advances understanding of blindness using research and data, have all voiced support for the Aira Employment Programme.
Aira combines the power of Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality with wearable technologies, plus the interaction of its network of trained remote human assistants, to provide the 300m blind and low vision people around the globe with immediate access to information and assistance.
