Air rage man in rant at Muslims; Merseyside man jailed after trying to strangle stewardess.

A MERSEYSIDE man launched a vicious anti-Muslim rant and tried to strangle an Arabic air stewardess during a drunken air rage attack, it emerged yesterday.

Roger Caine, from Birkenhead, has now been jailed for three months in Dubai on offences of deriding Islam, physical assault and excessive alcohol consumption.

A court in the United Arab Emirates city heard how the 56-year-old started drinking beer and spirits after getting on the Emirates Airline flight in Manchester last month.

Five hours into the six-hour journey he stormed to the back of the aircraft and started shouting insults at two female members of the cabin crew.

The court heard Caine yelled: "You should be terrified of me. I am Jewish and you are all Muslims."

One of the female stewardesses, an Egyptian, told the court trouble flared when she decided to stop serving Caine whisky.

"He was already very drunk. His condition was such that I could not allow him any drink," she said. After launching the anti-Muslim tirade, Caine then grabbed the Egyptian member of staff around the neck and attempted to strangle her.

Fellow cabin crew staff and other passengers leapt on him and managed to restrain him until the flight landed on December 1 last year.

Police arrested him and he was kept in custody until Monday's court appearance where a judge handed down a prison sentence along with a pounds 1,000 fine.

After the hearing, Caine told the court he wished to apologise for the incident and said that he was a frequent flyer who rarely drinks and that alcohol had been the cause for his behaviour.

An Emirates Airline spokeswoman said: "We have special training sessions to deal with air rage incidents such as this and nobody was hurt.

"We cannot comment any further as it is our policy to remain silent on court matters."
