Air near-miss to be probed.

A near miss between a passenger aircraft and military jet took place near Durham Tees Valley Airport, aviation chiefs report.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has released a preliminary report into the incident which happened about 15 miles southeast of the airport. It involved a Jetstream 41 (JS41) and the un-named military aircraft at about 7,500ft.

The JS41 was bound for the airport and was receiving an air traffic report at the time. The CAA said a full independent report will be released on the incident which happened on January 30 at 5.25pm.

But it stressed during 2005, the last year for which full data is available, there were 87 such incidents involving commercial air transport and 90% of these were assessed as having no risk of collision.
