Air New Zealand and Ansett Australia Join Star Alliance, `The Airline Network for Earth'.

MELBOURNE, Australia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 1999--Star Alliance member airlines Tuesday welcomed Ansett Australia and Air New Zealand into their global network, now extending to more than 720 destinations in more than 100 countries.

The move into Australia and New Zealand has strengthened the world's first global marketing alliance among airlines, launched in 1997, by extending coverage in the Australasian region and increasing the choices available to travelers. The Star Alliance network brings together airlines and largely complementary rather than overlapping routes.

For travelers around the world, the new airline partners open up a wide range of connections in Australia, New Zealand and throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Australian and New Zealand inbound tourism will benefit through the Star Alliance. Member airlines will have marketing opportunities to recommend Ansett and Air New Zealand to their own customers.

Star Alliance Brings Enhanced Benefits to Customers

Frequent flyer miles accumulated on flights offered by Ansett and Air New Zealand will be counted toward Star Gold and Star Silver status in the Star Alliance frequent flyer plan a traveler already belongs to.

Additionally, flight miles on Star Alliance member carriers, which are Air Canada, Lufthansa, SAS, Thai, United and VARIG, will earn points and higher status in Air New Zealand's Air Points program, and Ansett's Global Rewards program.

Higher status is recognized by all Star Alliance members and guarantees special treatment from all member airlines to all Star Alliance destinations. Benefits include lounge access, priority check-in and priority baggage handling.

All passengers on Star Alliance airlines enjoy the benefits of hassle-free and seamless air travel -- efficiencies resulting from a carefully integrated network. When transferring between Star Alliance airlines, passengers will receive boarding passes to their final destinations, and flight schedules are being refined to reduce connection times between Star Alliance carriers.

Star Alliance airlines have worked together closely for two years, giving them an important head start in providing these benefits to airline travelers.

The Star Alliance will continue to expand. All Nippon Airways of Japan will join Star Alliance in October 1999. More information on the Star Alliance network is available at
