Aircastle, Rolls-Royce, Airbus

Rolls-Royce Trent 700s will power six Airbus A330 freighters owned by Aircastle. Deliveries are scheduled for 2010-11. Rolls-Royce signed a TotalCare services agreement with Singapore Airlines covering the Trent 900s on SIA's A380s. SIA selected the engine for its initial 10 aircraft. Deal runs to 2021 and work will be conducted at Singapore Aero Engine Services. Nov 29, 2007

DHL Airways

Deutsche Post's delivery arm DHL Express will build a USD$175 million air hub in Shanghai as it moves to strengthen its foothold in the fast-growing market, the company said on Monday. It hopes the new facility, due to be up and running in the second half of 2010, will help it to maintain rapid sales growth in mainland China, DHL Express' Greater China president said after a news conference announcing the investment. The facility's peak sorting capacity will be up to 20,000 parcels and 20,000 documents per hr. DHL Airways, the cargo operator already operates or uses space on 500 weekly flights to or from Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. UPS also is establishing an air hub in Shanghai, while FedEx is building one in Guangzhou. Nov 26, 2007

Deutsche Post's delivery arm DHL Express will build a USD$175 million air hub in Shanghai as it moves to strengthen its foothold in the fast-growing market, the company said on Monday. DHL Express, along with rivals FedEx and United Parcel Service, is increasingly focusing on Asia, and China in particular, where rocketing global trade is driving demand for freight and logistics services. The air hub at Shanghai's Pudong International Airport will be able to sort up to 20,000 parcels and 20,000 documents per hour upon its completion, DHL said in a statement. The 55,000 square metre facility will be the third foreign-funded air hub in mainland China and the second of its kind in Shanghai. FedEx has committed to building an air hub in the southern city of Guangzhou, while UPS is building a hub in Shanghai. Nov 26, 2007

DHL Express is also investing USD$110 million to double the size of a facility at Hong Kong International Airport to 35,000 square metres. The company currently controls roughly 40 percent of the international express delivery market in China, leading UPS, which holds a one-fifth share, according to analysts. DHL Express and other DHL companies have invested USD$2.2 billion in China over the past few years, the company said. Nov 26, 2007

Qantas Airways

Qantas Airways faces a class action with a potential payout estimated to be $200 million over the cargo price-fixing plea bargain reached this week with US authorities. Legal firm Maurice Blackburn is leading the class action on behalf of Australian customers, while in New York 70 people have lodged a class action. According to The Australian, San Francisco attorneys have filed a class action suit against Qantas and eight other airlines alleging a fuel surcharge price fix on passenger tickets since 2004, a claim Qantas strongly denies.
