Air Algerie starting privatisation process.

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Air Algerie, the national carrier of Algeria, may be privatised soon and is currently drawing up plans to attract foreign investors.

Air Algerie's CEO and chairman stated on 15 January that the level of privatisation had not yet been decided and that a firm to advise on the privatisation process will be selected in February. Some 50 consultants from countries around the globe have apparently expressed interest in the advisory role, Reuters reported.

Officials at the national carrier are hoping that privatisation will allow Air Algerie to modernise its fleet and respond to competition from other airlines entering the market. The process is expected to take one year.
