Aha Calligraphy: Pointed Brush Writing.

These two videos illustrate and discuss two approaches to calligraphy using lettering brushes. One presents techniques unique to a pointed brush; the other presents ways to use a flat brush. Both are useful for calligraphers at any level of experience.

Pointed brush writing originated with ancient Chinese artists, but contemporary artists and graphic designers still rely upon its exciting look. This tape shows viewers the result of writing on top of Roman letters first sketched with pencil. It also shows many examples of commercial and personal applications.

Flat brush writing is perfect for signs, banners and writing on fabric. This videotape illustrates basic flat-brush techniques in an easy-to-understand way. It shows how a watercolor "bright" brush and water-based points are used. Basic Roman capitals are demonstrated along with other alphabet and serif variations. Included in the instructions are letter structure, width groups, scale, edge angle and spacing.

Both programs are well produced and present important information to anyone who is interested in calligraphy. Recommended for secondary and adult use.
