Age of discovery (1400-1550).

United Learning, 1998, VHS video, 27 min., color, closed-captioned, upper elementary/junior high, $99.00.

Featured in this broad overview of a century and a half of European exploration of the world are the endeavors of Henry the Navigator, Bartholomew Diaz, Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucchi, John and Sebastian Cabot, Ferdinand Magellan, Hernando Cortez, Francisco Pizarro, Francisco Coronado and Hernando Desoto. Included are some of the commercial, political and religious factors that prompted this incredible age of exploration, and some of the scientific and technology developments that helped it along. Although as lacking in depth as would be expected of a program covering so much history in under half an hour, this is a serviceable introduction to the epoch for target-aged viewers. The program comprises contemporary location footage, archival images, maps and screen text blended together with voice-over narration and background music. At the end is an on-screen 10-item "video quiz." Accompanying the video program are a 24-page printed teacher's guide and a set of blackline masters for student activities.
