Agatha Massaro.

NIANTIC, CT Agatha Massaro, age 83, of Stoneywood Dr., Niantic, formerly of Shrewsbury, MA and Long Island, died Sunday, December 12, 2010, at Fairview in Groton.

She was born in Brooklyn, NY August 5, 1927, the daughter of Gaspare and Bartolomea Crapanzano Adragna. She married John Salvatore Massaro in St. Joseph Church in Brooklyn on September 24, 1949. They made their home in Queens and Roslyn Heights, New York, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and Niantic, Connecticut. He survives her.

After graduating from Grover Cleveland High School in Queens, NY, she received paralegal training. For many years she was employed as the legal secretary for Sherman, Sterling, and Wright Real Estate Law Firm on Wall Street in Manhattan. In Massachusetts she completed coursework to become a librarian and worked at the Shrewsbury Town Library. Her love of history and antiques turned a hobby into a career as she researched, learned and gained the expertise to become a license antique dealer in Massachusetts.

She loved to travel and she and her husband traveled all over the world to places such as the United States, Canada, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, England, Ireland, Italy, Greece, and China. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed gardening, fitness, and belonged to the women's business club. She also volunteered at UMASS Medical Center, and was a communicant of St. Agnes Church in Niantic.

In addition to her husband she is survived by two sons, John Massaro, Jr. of East Lyme; James Massaro of Medford, NJ; two daughters, Patricia Whitaker of East Lyme; Christine Massaro of Belchertown, MA; a sister, Joy Fierro of Manhasset, NY; six grandchildren, Todd Jr. and Kathryn Whitaker, Andrew and Mark Massaro, Tanner and Dylan Kelting-Massaro. She was predeceased by a brother, Santoro Adragna.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M on Saturday December 18 in St. Agnes Church, Haigh Ave., Niantic. Interment will follow in East Lyme Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
