Airbus, EADS The U.S. Coast Guard has awarded prime contractor EADS North America a USD117 million contract for three HC-144A Ocean Sentry Maritime Patrol Aircraft, with options for up to six more aircraft over the next four years. The HC-144A is based on the highly successful Airbus Military CN235 tactical airlifter, more than 250 of which are in operation by 26 countries. The Ocean Sentry plays a crucial role in Coast Guard aviation missions that include maritime patrol, intelligence/surveillance/reconnaissance, cargo and personnel transport, and disaster relief. The HC-144A achieved initial operational capability last year, and has since distinguished itself with exceptional performance in a variety of situations, including the Coast Guard's responses to the Haiti earthquake and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Ocean Sentries have even been used to transport rehabilitated wildlife affected by the spill. Aug 23, 2010

Eurofighter, BAE Systems "Enthusiastic support" for the Indian government's 50 percent offset target and technology transfer ambitions are a cornerstone of the Eurofighter consortium's bid for India's USD12 billion, 126-aircraft medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) competition, says BAE Systems. Alan Garwood, business director of BAE - which along with Alenia Aeronautica and EADS is pitching the Typhoon for the MMRCA deal - says the consortium's preparedness to meet India's stipulations on technology transfer "absolutely distinguish" its bid. BAE Systems, he notes, has had a presence in India "for some 50-60 years" and, with partners, has built "around 1,000 aircraft" there, a track record he considers "unique among the competitors". The Typhoon is up against the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Dassault Rafale, Lockheed Martin F-16, RSK MiG-35 and Saab Gripen NG for the Indian contract. The Typhoon is also participating in a Japanese fighter competition geared toward sourcing 40-50 aircraft to replace McDonnell Douglas F-4s. Its Japanese campaign is led jointly by Alenia and BAE Systems, and Garwood considers it to have "a very good chance" of success, again citing the consortium's willingness to transfer technology. Competition for Japan's business will come from the F/A-18. Aug 24, 2010

Selex Galileo, Finmeccanica Selex Galileo has completed a new set of flight trials of the T20 30W version of its Gabbiano X-band sea and littoral surveillance radars with mechanical scanning antenna. The trials confirmed capabilities including surveillance with track while scan (TWS), high-resolution inverted synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) mode for naval targets identification and strip and spot SAR for ground surveillance. Installed on board an AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter with a nose-mounted antenna and solid-state amplifier, the system was able to spot a three-masted sailing boat near Genoa, and extract an ISAR profile at a distance of around 100nm (185km), according to Selex. The Gabbiano radar family was launched two years ago for nose or belly-mounted configurations and includes the T20 version, which has been upgraded to 30W and weighs 43kg (95lb) for helicopter and unmanned platforms, and the 200W T200 version, which at 62kg is suitable for fixed-wing maritime surveillance aircraft and coastal applications.
