Boeing

Boeing unveiled the prototype of a new variant of the F-15 Strike Eagle aimed at the Asian and Middle East markets that will incorporate stealthy coatings and structure here on Mar. 17. Company officials hope the new aircraft will garner up to 190 orders, extending the F-15 line beyond the current backlog of 38 aircraft for South Korea and Singapore. Since the company lost the Joint Strike Fighter contest to Lockheed Martin, the future of its St. Louis manufacturing facility has been uncertain. Continued F-15 sales, as well as additional orders for F/A-18E/Fs and EA-18Gs, are the only work in the foreseeable future for the plant. Major design changes in the new [sup.3]Silent Eagle[sup.2] version include internal bays within the existing conformal fuel tanks that can carry a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons. Each tank will be configured to hold two air-to-air missiles, including the AIM-9 and AIM-120 or a combination of the two.For the air-to-ground mission, 1,000- and 500-pound Joint Direct Attack Munitions can be carried or four 250-pound Small Diameter Bombs per tank. Weapons loadout can also be split between the AIM-120 and JDAM for a multirole mission. The Silent Eagle configuration includes 15-degree outward-canted V-tails - a shift away from the characteristic vertical fins of the F-15 that reduces the radar cross-section. Elbit Systems

Elbit Systems, the Israeli defence electronics manufacturer, made a show of its 2008 financial results presentation, holding a press conference in a big hall in the Tel Aviv stock exchange set up to demonstrate its capabilities through a movie combined with live actors dressed as soldiers equipped with Elbit products. But Israel's largest private defence company could be excused a bit of bravado. On growth alone, its performance is impressive, with revenue up by one-third to nearly $2.64 billion, while net income soared more than 2.5 times to $204.2 million, from $76.6 million in 2007. Elbit Systems

A strong fourth quarter helped Israeli defence and technology group Elbit Systems boost full-year 2008 profit by nearly 49% to $767.4 million on revenue up by one-third to more than $2.6 billion. Elbit ended the year with a $5 billion backlog, up from $4.6 billion at the close of 2007 and 72% attributable to non-Israeli orders. Mar 17, 2009

Israel Aerospace

Israel Aerospace Industries is to lay off 200 temporary workers across its Bedek Aviation freighter conversion and executive jet divisions. The firm employs around 16,500 staff. The move comes on top of an early-retirement scheme, which has been taken up by around 1,100 employees over the past three years. Mar 16, 2009

Rafael

Rafael is developing versions of its Litening and Reccelite targeting and reconnaissance pods for use with unmanned air vehicles. The Israeli company confirms the development of smaller, lighter versions of its current designs, which are carried by manned fighters such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, Lockheed Martin F-16 and Panavia Tornado, but declines to provide further details. The Litening targeting pod has a usual weight of around 210kg (485lb), while the Reccelite real-time intelligence and reconnaissance system weighs 200kg. Rafael says the demand for UAV-based reconnaissance equipment is increasing as armed forces introduce more unmanned systems into service as replacements for manned platforms. Mar 19, 2009
