The Advocate Outpatient Center in Des Plaines, Ill., is among the first in a series of more than 30 new Advocate clinics in the Chicagoland area to be delivered over a 10-year planning horizon. A highly-collaborative, ongoing partnership with an Integrated Lean Project Delivery (ILPD) team, including Advocate patients, physicians, nurses, staff and leadership, developed a standardized "Core Module" and architectural language adaptable to each community location.
The building is composed of a series of tectonic planes that slide, fold and float in order to define space, let in daylight and frame views of the surrounding landscape and community. Materials assigned were informed by the local context, including precast concrete and brick.
The ILPD team developed a prototype based on efficient operations, patient engagement, sustainability and technology for a clinic of the future that is flexible and adaptable. The Core Module is repeatable and scalable, and each successive clinic will reap the benefits of the last through a continual learning process--a project vision the team called Care360. This integrated ambulatory care model focuses on the broader context of how people connect to health, wellness and well-being.
A full literature review identified current relevant knowledge and gaps, and client-provided data was analyzed to identify operational benchmarks and goals. Findings led to the development of two clinic core module designs, dubbed "onstage/offstage" and "front-stage/backstage". Now that both models have been built and are in use, the team is initiating a rigorous empirical study to identify the optimal design.
