Advice on earth from the web.
A NEW online resource has been created to help grassland farmers manage soil more effectively.
Healthy Grassland Soils, which has been co-funded by DairyCo and EBLEX, aims to ensure producers have the tools required to study soil properties before choosing the best and least damaging management practices. Improving soil structure and conserving biological activity has been proven to support better plant growth, forage quality and thus profits. It can also minimise the negative impacts on the environment that can follow poor soil management.
The new resource features an array of information for producers, including advice on soil biology, videos and downloads. EBLEX livestock scientist Dr Liz Genever, said: "Understanding the soil on your farm is fundamental to profitable grassland farming. Estimates suggest soil compaction alone can cost up to PS250 per hectare per year; therefore, understanding what state your soil is in and making improvements as necessary can have huge financial benefit."
DairyCo research and development manager Dr Debbie McConnell said: "Soil is one of the most important assets farmers have. It is unique in each field; it's dynamic and changes constantly." See www.dairyco.org.uk or www.eblex.org.uk
