Adventure tours: American Youth Hostels offers new travel program.

American Youth Hostels, the leader in low-cost adventure travel for more than 50 years, announced a new travel program this year. In a constant endeavor to provide the best travel programs for the best value, AYH has completely revamped its World Adventure trip program and changed the name to American Youth Hostels Discovery Tours.

AYH Discovery Tours now offer a selection of hiking and cycling tours in the U.S., Canada and Europe which emphasize a "sense of place." Experience new places, not just travel through them, and learn what is special about the area you are visiting. AYH Discovery Tours bring you face-to-face with new cultures, people and environments--from French Canada to the California coast, from the Greek Islands to a newly-united Germany.

Tours are available for all ages: teens (ages 15-18), young adults (ages 17-25), adults (ages 18 and over) and persons 50 and older. They feature small, friendly groups--usually nine participants plus an AYH-trained tour leader. Hiking and cycling tours are rated for all levels of skill, from beginners to the experienced. Most hiking tours feature "day hikes," using a base camp to leave heavier packs and gear. Cycling tours range from a nine-day tour around New York's Finger Lakes region for only $350 to a 44-day cycling trip throughout Europe for $w995 (land cost).

Hiking tours include a nine-day hike and trail maintenance program in the John Muir Wilderness area for just $250, a nine-day hike through the Lochs of Scotland for only $425 (land cost) and a 23-day hiking tour of the Rocky Mountains for $1475. All tour prices include overnight accommodations in hostels or campgrounds, group-prepared meals, an entertainment fund and an experienced AYH leader.

Other AYH Discovery Tours destinations include Cape Cod, the Bay of Fundy, Montreal and Quebec, the Canadian Rockies, U.S. National Parks, Alaska, France's Loire Valley, united Germany, the Greek Islands, Ireland and more.

AYH Discovery Tours also introduced the first affordable package to New York City. This three-day package, available for only $65, includes two nights guaranteed confirmed accommodations at the New York International AYH-Hostel, continental breakfast two mornings, admission to the Empire State Building observation area, a ferry ticket to the Statue of Liberty and an extensive information packet featuring budget sightseeing opportunities around "the Big Apple."

All AYH Discovery Tours emphasize responsible tourism with awareness of and respect for natural environments and other cultures. AYH Tour leaders are trained in low-impact travel techniques and practice the general hosteling principle of treading lightly on our environment. Hostels are used for overnight accommodations wherever possible. Founded on the basis of economic, self-reliant travel, hostels feature dormitory-style lodgings with separate quarters for males and females. Hostels come in an infinite variety, from a lighthouse on the California coast to a castle in Germany. In addition, a number of tours can be combined to give the vacationer an unequalled travel experience. A 5% discount is offered to anyone who signs up for two or more tours in any one season.

The 24-page 1991 AYH Discovery Tours Catalog is available free of charge by writing: American Youth Hostels, Dept. 860, P.O. Box 37613, Washington, D.C. 20013-7613 or phone (202) 783-6161. American Youth Hostels, a member of the International Youth Hostel Federation, is a non-profit organization which promotes international understanding through educational and recreational travel programs and its network of hostels which bring travelers of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds together. AYH Discovery Tours is just one of AYH's programs.
