Adie blasts `trivial' Beeb.

Byline: Jessica Callan

ACCLAIMED TV reporter Kate Adie has launched a scathing attack on the BBC's "terrible" news coverage.

Adie, the BBC's award-winnning chief news correspondent, lashed out at her bosses for devoting too much air time on trivial stories.

The broadcaster - who covered the Tiananmen Square massacre, the Gulf War and the Bosnian conflict and was awarded an OBE for her work - claimed editors were now more concerned with lightweight stories than major news events.

She said: "The trend now is for non-stop items on lifestyle and consumer issues.

"It's just terrible and really is quite insulting to viewers to think that is all they want to hear about."

She blasted the BBC for their coverage of the massacre of the Nepalese royal family last weekend.

She stormed: "The only reason they were interested in the story was because it made for exotic shots.

"They felt it was a great opportunity to show weird hats - like the one the new king wore and the burning funeral pyres."

Adie, 55, now finds herself sidelined in favour of younger, better-looking reporters and spends most of her time away from the BBC writing a book and lecturing.
