Additions to the Line

A number of the subsidiaries and affiliates of the Nova Corp. of Alberta (Calgary) have recently launched new products, some of which are described below.

Novacor Chemicals Ltd.

Novacor recently launched its hexene-based low-density polyethylene resin production with seven hexene grades. The launch followed an $11-million expansion at Novacor's polyethylene plant in Joffre, Alta., completed in the fall of 1990. TF-Y826-CP and TF-Y826-F are grades that offer superior physical properties and toughness for industrial-film applications. TF-O119-D and TF-Y826-D have the excellent puncture and tear resistance needed for premium trash bags and thin-film applications. The grades suitable for stretch-wrap applications are TF-O119-F and TF-O119-FP. Grade TF-Y826-BP can be used for grocery sacks.

Also recently announced is another high-molecular-weight film grade in the high-density polyethylene line. HF-W945-H is intended as a paper replacement and can be used for merchandise bags, T-shirt bags, can liners and mailing envelopes. The resin can be used by itself or in blends to make films that need thin-gauge, high-strength, and high-output rates.

For use in making pipe, there is PD-2037-A, a linear-low-density butene copolymer suitable for pressure pipes up to 100mm in diameter. It has high strength at high temperatures and superior environmental stress crack resistance (ESCR).

HD-2038-A is a high-molecular weight, high-density hexene copolymer intended for the sheet market. It can be used to make large-part thermoforming products in which high-melt strength, excellent impact strength, superior ESCR and high rigidity are needed.

Genesis Polymers

This affiliate of Nova's has added a third thermoplastic olefin to its family of ultra-high-impact-resistant polypropylene copolymers. These copolymers are suitable for such high-impact applications as exterior and interior automotive assemblies, equipment components, housing and tool boxes.

AP-7710-HS is intended for applications that need good ridigity and high-energy absorption at both elevated and extremely low-temperature conditions (a particularly useful attribute in Alberta).

Polysar Ltd.

A new engineering resin from Polysar Ltd. was recently approved for a flame-retardant rating for materials at lower thickness levels than previously available for alloys and blends. SD-9102-F is suitable for telecommunications equipment, electrical and electronic components and automotive applications.

Paul Francis, engineering resins marketing manager, believes this alloy is the first to be UL-approved for V-0 flame retardant rating at 0.78mm. Generally, materials with this type of approval are at least twice as thick. The resin also has good toughness and scratch resistance.
