Adam Sklute.

Adam Sklute resigned from the Joffrey Ballet last season to become the artistic director of Ballet West in Salt Lake City, UT. Sklute had worked as the Joffrey's associate artistic director under Gerald Arpino since 2005. His stagings include Arpino's Ruth, Ricordi per Due and Round of Angels, Vicente Nebrada's Nuestros Valses, and Jiri Kylian's Return to a Strange Land.

Originally from Berkeley, CA, Sklute studied at the Oakland and San Francisco Ballet Schools. As a young dancer, and with just three years of formal training, he received a scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet School, where he was handpicked by Robert Joffrey to join the Joffrey II Dancers, and later became one of the last two dancers promoted by Joffrey to full company member. He performed professionally with the company for 11 years, dancing lead roles in ballets choreographed by Ashton, Balanchine, and John Cranko, among others.

Sklute takes the helm as Ballet West's fifth artistic director, leading the company's 35 dancers in over 70 annual performances in the Salt Lake Valley and throughout the U.S. "Adam is extremely energetic and outgoing, and he makes you feel so comfortable as a dancer," says principal dancer Christiana Bennett. "He's really going to be great for Ballet West and for Utah."

Sklute is excited about his new role and already feeling inspired. "I will continue to present the classics but I want to add new life and a contemporary element to them," he says. "I think new works are very important, because if you don't push the art form it will stagnate. And I'm passionate about the art form. Ballet is everything for me."
