Unilever Selects Acta as Global Standard for Integrating Data From

a Broad Range of Enterprise Applications and Systems

Acta Technology, Inc., provider of the first real-time data integration platform that provides enterprise data for analytic, eCommerce, supply chain and customer relationship management uses, announced today that its Data Integration Platform will be used by Unilever throughout its worldwide organization, in a multi-million dollar contract for data integration spread over the next two years.

Unilever, headquartered in the United Kingdom, selected Acta as part of its global IT strategy and will deploy Acta's products to support data integration requirements at both Global and Regional levels. These are critical components of Unilever's `Path to Growth' strategy.

The `Path to Growth' is designed to deliver significantly improved top-line growth and operating margins for Unilever by 2004. This will be achieved by focusing on Unilever's leading brands and supporting them with strong innovation, increased marketing support, a more streamlined supply chain and simpler business processes. Acta Technology will be a core component of the Unilever Information Program (UIP) initiative, a key enabler of `Path to Growth.'

"At the beginning of our selection process we were looking for a tool to support UIP by simplifying and automating the collection of data from a wide range of legacy, ERP applications, and numerous external sources," said Chris Broe, program director for UIP in London. "Our RFI went out to all the leading ETL vendors and from the high standards of response, it soon became apparent that wider integration requirements could be addressed at the same time. We widened the RFI accordingly and, after a detailed evaluation, selected Acta as a global standard."

Broad Data Sources Require Robust Solution

Unilever's requirements included the ability to handle hundreds of disparate data sources. They viewed the solution must have a robust, high-performance ability to manage both their batch and near real-time data movement, provide bi-directional data flows between enterprise systems and applications requirements with a high-degree of reliability. As it is to be used as a global standard, the tool also needed to be quick to deploy and easy-to-use, ensuring cost-effective ongoing usage on a worldwide scale.

Acta's Data Integration Platform was put through its paces in a rigorous and competitive proof-of-concept exercise, conducted alongside three other vendors. Acta products have already been implemented in two pilot projects.

"Acta Technology's solution proved to be the best fit for Unilever both technically and functionally," said Steve Applegate, integration manager for UIP in London. "Coupled with Acta's vision for the future, these were the deciding factors when the results were evaluated."

"Unilever has taken a global and strategic view of its data integration requirements. It is our belief that data integration on an enterprise-wide scale will be common-place in the future and a necessary survival tactic for the global economy," stated Carol Mills Baldwin, president and CEO for Acta Technology. "The Unilever contract is verification that Acta is uniquely positioned to solve global data integration challenges for leading companies worldwide."

Rapid Deployment and Open Architecture Provide Fast ROI and Extensibility

Acta's Data Integration Platform provides one of the fastest ways to achieve data integration based upon its rapid installation and a number of out-of-the-box, ready-to-install eCaches -- packaged data applications.

Acta's Data Integration Platform consists of the ActaWorks data server -- a batch and real-time data movement engine -- which can access multiple sources and will intelligently manage and optimize the performance of an enterprise's data infrastructure. ActaWorks is complemented by Acta eCaches, pre-packaged batch and real-time data movement and business logic data applications for analytics and other data intensive integration projects, like Customer Relationship Management and of course, Supply Chain Management.

As such, Acta eCaches are a perfect and ready-made solution for Unilever's global and regional information requirements, being easy and fast-to-install, customizable as well as providing open access to all relevant information using SQL and XML-based interfaces.
