Act of treachery.

MANAMA: Bahrain's Interior Minister yesterday condemned as an "act of treachery" the assassination attempt on Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Washington.

In an exclusive television interview with Al Arabia, Lt Gen Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, spoke frankly about its security repercussions - and also the aftermath of Bahrain's recent unrest.

Commenting on Press leaks from Washington indicating a connection between the perpetrators of the plot and some of those who led the protests in Bahrain last February and March, the minister said: "As far as the incident is concerned, we thank God that the plot was aborted. Thanks also goes to the security departments for their efforts in thwarting it.

"I call it an act of treachery that is incompatibility with all co-operation agreements and norms of neighbourliness. "Those who are behind such plots usually target only good and patriotic people.

"If it was meant to disrupt Saudi-US relations, I believe the results proved to be the opposite of that goal."

Shaikh Rashid also spoke about the security situation in Bahrain, hailing the security forces for restoring law and order.
