Act big: Manitoba Business Magazine's 50 fastest growing companies.

IT'S BEEN A MINEFIELD OUT THERE FOR BUSINESS LATELY. Soft markets, crises of cash and a lot of belt-tightening and political instability. You've had to batten down and pump up to keep the company growing or in many cases just to hold ground. Yet here you are on the 50 Fastest-Growing Companies list in this magazine. You started the company to be a success and here you are screaming down the fast lane while your competitors are stumbling, you hope, way back in your dust. So here's some advice from Donald Hambrick, a business professor at Columbia University who tracked a list of fast-growing American companies. He said those that stumbled did so by losing sight of their strengths during those 60-hour weeks on the way to being a medium or big firm. He said fast-growing companies are not necessarily thriving companies. Even the best people bum out amidst the pressures of growth. But there is some advice on that point. Thomas Watson, the founder of IBM, felt that the best leaders came from within the company and were rigorously trained to handle fast growth. He said that in order to become a big company, you've got to act like one from the start. Good luck to you, and all those working hard to make it happen. 1. E-Z CUT INC.
