SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Supporting its commitment to provide the higher education market with advanced technology solutions, Acer America Corporation today announced that it will launch a new generation of Texas Instruments(R) Extensa-Scholar series* notebooks. As part of the Acer Scholar Program, students, faculty and administrators will now have the first notebook engineered to provide three-to-four hours of single battery life at an entry level price point that satisfies even the most discerning budgets.

"The growing trend in the higher educational market is the acknowledgment that students and teachers are more productive and more effective when equipped with a notebook PC," said Greg Nakagawa, senior director, commercial marketing of Acer America. "The new Extensa-Scholar series provides technology advancements, such as Heuristic Power Management, that gives today's students and teachers a solution that allows them to work throughout the day and all around the campus."

Designed to provide comprehensive technology solutions for higher education, the Acer Scholar Program provides competitive advantages for students, faculty and staff with complete packages including: leading mobile products, special services and support programs, such as convenient financing and technology partnerships that help universities provide enhanced computing and learning environments.

Extensa-Scholar Series: High Performance -- High Value

The two models of the Extensa-Scholar series are powered by either a 133 or 150MHz Intel Pentium(R) processor with MMX(TM) technology, and configured with either 16MB or 32MB base EDO RAM DIMMs, expandable to 128MB. All include a fixed 20x (maximum) CD-ROM drive for greater reliability, and a "hot-pluggable" floppy disk drive that connects through the parallel port.

For easy-to-use communications, an integrated 33.6Kbps modem and optional NIC (network interface card) allows students and faculty to reliably connect to the Internet or the school's local area network.

A brilliant 12.1-inch display and 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro stereo system provides virtual desktop replacement audio and visual capabilities. Additionally, the removable hard disk drive and two Card Bus (two type II or one type III) PC Card slots provide increased system flexibility and future user upgradability.

With a form factor that easily fits into most backpacks, students and faculty will appreciate the lean, 12.3" x 9.5" x 1.9" and lightweight 6.5 pounds, design.

High Contrast DSTN Displays

Leading the wave of new low cost/high performance dual scan screen technologies, Acer America introduces and integrates High Contrast (HC-DSTN) dual scan technology with the Extensa-Scholar ESS2 model. Immediate benefits of the HC-DSTN screens are evidenced by a greater contrast ratio when compared to traditional DSTN screens. With High Contrast screens, the viewer sees a sharper, more crisp image than previously capable with standard dual scan displays.

The Extensa-Scholar series notebooks are only available through Acer certified education resellers and campus resellers throughout North America. Extensa-Scholar shipments will begin at the end of November, 1997.

The Extensa-Scholar series is backed by a comprehensive two-year limited warranty, with an option to purchase an additional two-year limited warranty. Additionally, Acer America offers a toll-free service and support line dedicated solely to purchasers of Extensa-Scholar series products.
