Acer America Introduces Aspire -- First Computer Designed Specifically for the Home Market; Quality Systems Offer Innovation in Color, Design, Intuitive User Interface, Voice Activation and Superior Sound, the Latest Pentium Technology and Microsoft Windows 95.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 5, 1995--For years home computer users have had little choice but to buy systems for their families that were designed for business.

With an estimated 50 percent (a) of American households projected to own a computer by 1998, the need is growing for quality computers that meet the unique needs of a family -- computers that are easy to use for experienced or novice family computer users, powerful enough to take advantage of new on-line opportunities and multimedia applications, value priced, and stylish to complement any home decor and room in the house.

Acer America redefines the home computer market with Aspire. Offering unique style, superior functionality and excellent value, Acer's new Aspire PCs are state-of-the-art consumer electronics products, bringing advanced multimedia, communications and computing technology into the home. Designed in conjunction with noted Sunnyvale, Calif., firm, frogdesign, Inc., the systems are available in both emerald and charcoal colors unique to the PC industry.

New Home Computing Era

With Aspire, even novice computer users will be able to set-up the PC in five minutes, navigate the system with easy, intuitive icons, launch applications and playback telephone answering machine messages with voice commands. In addition, Aspire owners can choose from over 50 pre-loaded software and reference titles that are categorized under custom folders for learning, entertainment, communication, home and utilities. Custom file folders can be created for each family member using images from family photographs with EasyPhoto. Aspire also has the most complete communication programs for accessing and exploring the Internet.

"The Acer Aspire system's unique design and advanced technology will catapult the home PC industry into a new era," said Ronald Chwang, President & CEO, Acer America Corp. "Once relegated to the corporate and small business marketplace, the PC is finally becoming an integral part of the family."

Design and Functionality Combined

In addition to a design that complements any home decor, these systems provide a level of power and functionality beyond anything previously intended for the home PC market. "This is the first PC in the industry to combine such a unique design for the home with technology this advanced," said Michael Culver, Senior Director of Product Management, Acer America Corp. "With voice activation for hands free operation, and over 50 pre-loaded titles, valued at $1,700, all household members are bound to find many ways in which the Aspire systems will make their lives easier."

With the launch of the Aspire systems, Acer has introduced voice as the next standard for interacting easily with computers. Other key features of the new Aspire line include:

-- A built-in microphone accepts verbal commands, which can be used to perform such functions as playing back answering machine messages or opening a favorite software title.

-- Aspire's centrally located controls allow easy access and one-button operation.

-- Powerful multimedia features include AuraSound speakers, QSound 3D stereo enhancement technology, volume control on the monitor within easy reach, and a video controller which supports real-time video playback for future MPEG movies and software.

-- Every Aspire system is equipped with speakerphone, telephone answering machine, voice mail, fax capabilities and Internet access for exploring the information superhighway.

-- The Aspire's centered CD-ROM and floppy drives, soft curves and colors, and keyboard palmrest are ergonomically pleasing.

"Acer's Aspire computers are the most exciting in the industry today," said Debbie Meagher, Vice President, Best Buy, a major consumer electronics retailer. "Consumers want computers that fit their lifestyles and their tastes, and the Aspire does just that."

All of the Aspire systems come complete with Acer's unique "Out of Box Experience" (OOBE), a comprehensive program with color-coded cable connectors and an easy-to-follow color poster that guides consumers through the initial set-up process in less than five minutes. Developed by Acer, the Acer Computer Explorer (ACE), is an intuitive user interface that simplifies personal computing by organizing software into categories according to specific user needs. Designed to complement Windows 95, ACE version 2.0 is a 32-bit application that provides click-free navigation, full-text balloon help, and the ACE Software Installer so users can easily add to their current software offerings. ACE's clear and simple graphics offers users an effective tool to help organize their PC desktop.

Cutting-Edge Technology

Acer's Aspire systems are equipped with a full-duplex speakerphone and are pre-loaded with Windows 95 -- the new operating system that allows for greater robustness and speed, ease of use, and enhanced multimedia.

Available in both charcoal and emerald, the Acer Aspire line consists of 11 desktop and minitower configurations. The Aspire 100 MHz 486 entry-level desktop presents an exceptional value at an anticipated street price of $1,299. Its standard equipment package includes 8MB RAM, 540MB hard disk drive, double speed CD-ROM, a 14.4 data/fax modem and full-duplex speakerphone. The entry-level Pentium desktop contains a 75 MHz Pentium processor, 8MB of RAM, an 850MB hard drive, quad-speed CD-ROM and a 14.4 data/fax modem for an estimated street price of $1,599. At the high-end, the 133 MHz Pentium Aspire minitower has 16MB of RAM, a 1.6GB hard drive, five-speed CD-ROM and a 28.8 data/fax modem -- with an estimated street price of $2,999.
