If you are after a refreshing change and need to eradicate dry, dead ends, then a super-cool crop is the Afro hair look to go for.

"Afro hair types can be difficult to style. Therefore, short haircuts are a great way to keep hair maintained," says Michelle Thompson from Francesco Group who created this stunning look.

"Afro hair tends to get very dry and brittle due to heated styling tools and styling procedures, therefore, sometimes it's best to get your hair cut short, to allow it to become healthier and be able to grow," she explains.

Michelle gives the lowdown on how to achieve a sensational crop look:

DO have a consultation to make sure your stylist is assessing your hair and aware of its texture and condition.

DO have regular cuts in order to keep your hair maintained and to avoid it shrivelling up.

DON'T go to a regular hairdresser. Afro haircutting requires an expert Afro hairdresser, who is fully aware of what techniques, products and technology to use when dealing with Afro hair and the curl pattern.

DON'T cut your hair yourself or allow someone to cut it with blunt or unprofessional scissors. Your hair should always be cut with professional hair scissors, otherwise it could become damaged. Again, this is why you should go to an expert Afro hairdresser.

Benefits of a short crop

Michelle advises: "There are so many different benefits to having Afro hair short. Your hair will be stronger as it is not old enough to have been as manipulated as longer hair. Shorter hairstyles can also be seen as protective hairstyles, as they are not rubbing against clothing and being damaged by friction. And the best news is... your hair will not take as much time to wash, style or detangle and will therefore be tons easier to manage."

Hair palm painting? We hear you wonder. You may never have heard of it, but it's a hot new technique currently sweeping its way through Afro hair land.

"Palm painting is a progressive play on the balayage technique, allowing the colourists a 100% free hand," explains Toni & Guy international technical artistic director Georgie Mathers.

He adds: "Melting colour into the hair with a smoother surface of the palm allows the blend to be softer in result, avoiding any harsh lines you can sometimes see when highlights are applied. It's a great technique to use on Afro hair, however, it should be applied in a much more gentle approach in terms of colour choice and product. Also, remember your Afro hair texture is all about tight curls, so tiny sections will be very diffused and soft. What's more, it depends on the desired effect, meaning stronger or softer placement should always be used."
