IAI/aecXML Project Will Create XML-Based Communication Standard

for Building Industry Professionals to Share and Manage

Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) Information, the leader in permit management solutions, today announced that it has been selected to serve on the International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI) Board of Directors.

As a member of the IAI Board, joins 26 leaders of the AEC+FM community including The American Institute of Architects, McGraw-Hill, Bentley Systems, Autodesk, and others in establishing critical information exchange standards.

One of IAI's primary standards projects is the aecXML initiative to define language standards for the exchange of architecture, engineering, and construction data, enabling building industry professionals to share and manage information across all software platforms.

"The sharing of information between construction professionals and local governments will have a dramatic effect on the construction industry. Our involvement displays our deep commitment to provide our clients with the most effective means to communicate with their communities," said Maury Blackman, vice president of corporate development. "The $1.3 trillion U.S construction industry is highly fragmented, with hundreds of different software applications in use. Current industry data exchange practices are costly and inefficient. By streamlining the process and creating a unified strategy to facilitate the exchange of AEC information over the Internet, the IAI aecXML initiative represents significant cost savings potential for the entire industry. is delighted to be able to contribute to this process and serve as one of the driving forces to help establish aecXML as the industry standard for AEC data interchange."

"The Alliance is delighted to have on its Board.'s market standing in providing automated permit solutions for local governments and building professionals brings a unique perspective to the aecXML project and IAI," said Richard Geissler, IAI's executive director and COO.

The Alliance is a global organization with nine independently established IAI organizations in North America, Europe, and the Pacific Rim representing 620 members in 24 countries. Established in 1995, the Alliance has developed "industry foundation classes" (IFCs)(TM), standards for exchanging dynamic objects among various platforms and applications serving the AEC+FM community. In the Fall of 1999, IAI assumed responsibility for the aecXML initiative working with the AEC+FM industry to develop standards appropriate for the exchange of information over the Internet.

The addition of to the project's board of directors completes the circle of the construction process by including the building permit process. The permit process plays a critical role in any construction project in that it determines the beginning and the end of the project via building permits, inspections and occupancy approval. Standardizing the information exchange allows for the tight integration of the building permit process into the ongoing management of the construction project. aecXML will enable pertinent information to be readily available to building officials reviewing construction documents for permits, and will allow for the efficient markup and dissemination of changes required for the issuance of a permit.

The aecXML initiative ( is a building industry activity begun by Bentley Systems in September 1999 and transferred to the Alliance to standardize the definition and exchange of architecture, engineering, and construction data. Based on the emerging eXtensible Markup Language (XML) standard for electronic communications over the Internet, aecXML will be used to communicate information that is routinely exchanged between building industry professionals. Using this standard, industry companies will be able to share project information and conduct e-commerce across all software applications. More than 450 organizations worldwide are participating in the aecXML project.

About the aecXML Project

aecXML is a framework for using the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) standard for electronic communications in the architectural, engineering and construction industries. It includes an XML schema to describe information specific to the information exchanges between participants involved in designing, constructing and operating buildings, plants, infrastructure and facilities. The various software applications used by these participants can transfer messages formatted according to the aecXML schema to coordinate and synchronize related project information. In addition, a standard aecXML specification will facilitate e-commerce between suppliers and purchasers of equipment, materials, supplies, parts and services based on that same technical information.

About provides the most robust, real-time e-permitting solutions for government agencies that effectively integrate consumer friendly front-end services directly with back-office data systems, resulting in a faster-moving process through better inter-departmental communication. These solutions enable contractors, building professionals and the public to apply for and obtain building permits, track the status of permits, and schedule inspections online, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. is the market leader in permit automation solutions for local governments and building professionals with 275 clients using their solutions.
