Absent from work: HED issues show-cause notices to 289 lecturers.

LAHORE -- The Punjab Higher Education Department (HED) has served show cause notices to 289 female lecturers of public colleges of the province for being absent from their duties.

According to a notification issued by the HED, the identified lecturers have been asked to submit a written defence, stating the reason for their absence and why penalties should not be imposed on them. The department wants to impose punishment and penalties against the identified lecturers under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability (PEEDA) Act 2006.

'The Punjab Director Public Instructions (Colleges) in Lahore has reported that the mentioned female lectures were found absent from duty since long without any intimation or permission by the competent authority.'

'The competent authority, under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability Act, 2006, in due consideration of the facts of these cases, is of the view that following lady officers are willfully absent from duty.'

The notification, along with the instructions, issued a list of lecturers.

The HED had asked the identified lecturers to submit a reply, within seven days of receipt of the notices issued to them.

'You are asked to show cause in writing within seven days of receipt of this notice as to why one or more of the penalties as prescribed under Section 4 of the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability Act, 2006 should not be imposed upon you. Your reply to this show cause notice should reach the undersigned within the said period, failing which, it shall be presumed that you have no defense to offer.'

The notification further instructs the lecturers that the relevant record would be made available to them if they wanted to check it. It said, 'In case you desire to consult any record, on which the aforesaid charge(s) is based or is relevant to the aforesaid charge(s), you may do so with prior arrangement with the undersigned within seven days of the receipt of this notice.'
