Abseil challenge raises PS8k to boost various charities; WINDFALL.

Byline: DAVID MACKAY

Charities in Moray are celebrating an PS8,000 windfall after dozens of people took part in a fundraising event.

A group of 73 people abseiled down the former cinema on Lossiemouth's Queen Street, which was previously occupied by Grampian Furnishers and is now home to the Forty Four fitness centre.

This year was the third time the event has been held with the fundraising total reaching nearly double last year's amount.

The cash will go towards supporting Clan Cancer Support, which received about PS2,000, Enable Scotland, which received PS1,000, Longmore Hall in Keith, which received PS900, and outdoor adventure charity Outfit Moray, which will receive PS2,235.

Participants could also elect to abseil down the front of the building for a cause of their own choice.

Karen Cox, Outfit Moray's community fundraiser, said: "It was such an amazing day. We knew it was going to be busy as we had closed entries a few days before, but we were blown away by the number of people joining us on the square to support their friends and family taking part.

"Being a small charity ourselves, we know just how hard it is to raise funds and, with 535 charities in Moray all fighting for the same pound, we are proud to be able help support our fellow good causes.

"Last year's event raised just over PS4,000 and we are absolutely delighted that this year's total completely surpassed that."
