Abe conveys intention to quit as LDP secretary general to Koizumi.
Liberal Democratic Party Secretary General Shinzo Abe on Wednesday again conveyed his intention to resign immediately to take the blame for the party's failure to retain all 51 seats in the July 11 House of Councillors election as he met with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, LDP lawmakers said.
But Koizumi, who is also president of the LDP, dissuaded him from resigning.
On the night of July 11, Abe had told Koizumi by phone of his intention to resign when the LDP was heading for a setback in the upper house election. The LDP gained only 49 seats against its target of winning at least 51.
