Abduction of women to force them into marriage disgraceful practice in Kyrgyzstan u Ombudsman.
Abduction of women to coerce them into marriage is a disgraceful practice for Kyrgyzstan, Ombudsman Kubat Otorbayev said today.
The Ombudsman supported the today's flash mob held by university students in protest against abduction of women to force them into marriage.
Abduction of women to force them into marriage should be ranked as crime against personal human freedom. Such crime is accompanied by rape and cruel treatment of the abductee, the Ombudsman stressed.
"In such cases criminal case should be launched under several articles of the Criminal Code. We want to submit the respective changes in the Criminal Code to Parliament for consideration. We are working on the bill now," the Ombudsman said.
Around 50,000 families are started in Kyrgyzstan every year. Some 5,000-7,000 cases involved abduction of women. In 6% of cases violence was used, the Ombudsman said.
"This is dismaying statistics and this is not a custom of the Kyrgyz people, such custom never existed. Abduction of women is disgrace, sign of wildness, cruelty and backwardness," the Ombudsman underlined.
