AZTAR ANNOUNCES ITS SELECTION AS FINALIST FOR WINDSOR CASINO

PHOENIX, Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The selection of Aztar Corp. (NYSE: AZR) as a finalist in a competition to develop and operate a large casino in Windsor, Ontario, across the United States-Canada border from Detroit, was announced today by Ontario provincial officials.
"Aztar's selection is welcome recognition of the company's achievements as a developer and operator of large land-based casinos and of the quality of our proposal for Windsor," said Paul E. Rubeli, Aztar chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer. "Our team has designed an exceptional facility and a very strong operating plan for the Windsor market, and we intend to convince the Province of Ontario that we are the company best suited for the project."
Details of Aztar's proposal will be made public at the discretion of the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations, as required by the terms of the ministry's request for proposals, Rubeli pointed out. The ministry is directing the project, which calls for a 75,000- square-foot casino, a 300-room hotel and related facilities, to be owned by the province and operated by the successful company on a parcel of land on the eastern edge of downtown Windsor. The site fronts on the Detroit River facing downtown Detroit.
Aztar's selection as a finalist was announced by Judith Wolfson, Deputy Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations, in Toronto. The list of finalists was chosen by a panel of deputy ministers from four Ontario ministries. The ministry identified other finalists from among the nine proposals submitted last June 30 as Bally's Canada Casino Inc. (in partnership with Canadian Pacific Hotels and Resorts), Harrah's Casino Hotels, and Windsor Casino Ltd. (partnership of Caesar's, Circus Circus and Hilton). The successful company also will operate an interim casino in the Art Gallery of Windsor that the province expects to open early in 1994.
Aztar is a publicly traded company that operates TropWorld Casino and Entertainment Resort in Atlantic City, N.J., the Tropicana Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, and the Ramada Express Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nev.
