AYRES AND GRACES; Poet Pam and husband put beautiful Midlands mansion on market for PS2 million.

Byline: BOB HAYWOOD Special Correspondent

OET Pam Ayres is trying to sell her magnifi-cent home in the Midlands.

PBut her dream of down-sizing in the New Year has gone from bad to verse.

Pam and her theatre producer husband, Dudley Russell, live in Grade II-listed Norcote House, near Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

The eight-bedroom Georgian manor house - set in 20 acres of land - was put on the market in April for PS2.5 million.

But, to date, no one has bought it.

So now the purchase price has been reduced and the sumptuous property can be snapped up for a knockdown PS1.95 million.

Pam and Dudley, who have two sons, James and William, have lived in Norcote House for 30 years but want to move to a smaller home.

Their dreamy house - in the heart of the Cotswolds - also has a one-bedroom annexe.

Pam, 68, shot to fame in 1975 on TV's Opportunity Knocks with her down-to-earth poetry.

She has been dubbed The People's Poet. Among the nation's favourite odes is Oh, I wished I'd looked after my teeth.

The poem ranked in the Top Ten in a BBC poll to find the Nation's 100 Favourite Comic Poems.

She was also Britain's fifth bestselling poet twice - in 1998 and 1999.

Pam, also an author and TV and radio show presenter, was awarded the MBE in 2004 for services to literature and entertainment. Her present luxury home is a stark contrast to where she grew up in a council house in Oxfordshire.

Now, she rears rare breed cattle and sheep, pigs, chickens, and is a beekeeper.

The delay in Pam's house sale will give her more time to say goodbye to Norcote House.

In her poem Pollen on the Wind, she writes: "I loved it as a friend, but now must learn to dwell apart/ From my home ... my home embedded on my heart."

Pam lives in The Cotswold Triangle of super-rich celebrities. Among her near neighbours was actress Liz Hurley, who was out of luck for nearly a year after in trying to sell one of her luxury homes in the region.

But - as the Sunday Mercury previously reported - Liz had a novel approach to clinching an eventual sale.

She INCREASED the sale price on Ampney Knowle to PS9 million.

Liz bought the six-bedroomed farmhouse for PS3.3 million in 2003. As we revealed in June 2014, when Ampney Knowle was put on the market for PS6 million, she said she would stay in the Midlands when the property was finally sold.

Liz, 50, now lives solely in her 'other' house, Donnington Hall at Ledbury, Herefordshire - which is 40 miles away.

She bought the 13-bedroom hall with her ex-boyfriend Shane Warne, the former Australian cricketer, for PS6 million.
