AWARD-WINNING IBM ROCHESTER SITE MEETS ISO 9000 QUALITY STANDARD

ROCHESTER, Minn., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM announced today that its award-winning Rochester development and manufacturing site has met the ISO 9000 standard for quality assurance, making it one of the few recipients of both the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the international quality registration.
The Rochester site develops, manufactures and supports IBM's industry-leading family of business computers, the Application System/400(a), as well as direct access storage devices for personal computers and midrange systems.
Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson congratulated "the people at IBM" and noted that "two years after winning the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, this nation's highest honor for quality, they have again represented Minnesota as a national quality leader."
The governor pointed out that "ISO registration is becoming a critical prerequisite for any business that markets its products overseas."
The governor said, "By complying with ISO requirements, IBM in Rochester will preserve its position as a leading Minnesota exporter." Last year the Rochester site's worldwide exports totalled nearly $550 million.
ISO 9000 is a set of standards and guidelines for a quality assurance management system. It was established by the International Organization for Standardization and has been adopted by the European community. Many European community companies, and most IBM locations in Europe, are ISO 9000 registered. IBM Rochester's sister facility in Santa Palomba, Italy, is also ISO certified for its manufacturing activities.
"The ISO registration is another acknowledgement of the Rochester site's outstanding achievement in quality," said IBM Vice President John M. Thompson, general manager, Application Business Systems. "Rochester's quality has helped make the AS/400(a) a highly successful business computer, providing unmatched value to our customers."
"The ISO registration this year, our IBM Quality Awards last year and the Baldrige Award in 1990 recognize the achievements of every individual at the Rochester site," said Robert M. Unterberger, site general manager. "Complying with ISO requirements reinforces Rochester's commitment to quality. It will enable us to provide better quality products and create greater value for our customers."
Rochester won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1990 and several IBM Quality Awards, which recognize outstanding quality achievement within the corporation.
Since its introduction in June 1988, the AS/400 has become the world's most popular midrange system, with more than 200,000 systems shipped to customers and more than 20,000 applications available worldwide.
