 AVONDALE INDUSTRIES, INC. SHIPYARDS DIVISION
CONTRACT MODIFICATION APPROVED BY U.S. NAVY
NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Avondale Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AVDL) today announced that the Secretary of the Navy has approved awarding a contract modification to add double hulls to the last three T-AO Fleet Oilers under contract with the company.
Although the final amount of the modification needs to be negotiated, it is expected to be within the $125 million of funds appropriated for fiscal year ending Sept. 30. These three T-AO's are the final ships in a program of 16 ships to be constructed by the company. To date, 10 of the vessels have been completed and delivered.
Avondale was informed of this by Congressman Bob Livingston and Sen. J. Bennett Johnston. Johnston and Livingston were instrumental in providing funds for this effort in the fiscal year 1992 Defense Appropriations Law. The company estimates the contract modification will require approximately 1,200 Avondale workers at its peak which will continue until early 1995.
This modification to the existing contract will enable these vessels to be constructed in accordance with the current requirements of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990. The Navy's voluntary installation of the double hull provides significant protection for the environment against accidental oil spills. This change allows these ships to operate more safely in all areas, especially in inland waters.
Avondale Industries, Inc. headquartered in metro New Orleans, is one of the nation's leading marine fabricators. In addition to its shipbuilding operations, the company specializes in boat construction and is a major repair contractor for commercial and Navy ships. It is also involved in the modular construction of plants and components for a variety of land-based industries.
