AVON RECEIVES '1993 CAAT RECOGNITION AWARD' FROM JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY

NEW YORK, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Avon Products, Inc. (NYSE: AVP) has received a "1993 CAAT Recognition Award" for its commitment and dedication to non-animal alternatives for product safety evaluation. The commendation, one of two conferred this year, was presented by the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing.
"Avon has long played a leading role in utilizing and funding non- animal alternatives," said Alan M. Goldberg, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. "Because of its commitment and dedication to the principles of the 3Rs -- reduction, refinement and replacement -- and use of in vitro systems for product safety evaluation, we're pleased to recognize Avon's leadership with this award."
The "1993 CAAT Recognition Award" was presented during the World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences in Baltimore.
"Throughout Avon's 108-year history, product safety has been our overriding concern," said Neil Scancarella, Vice President, Research & Development, Avon Products, Inc. "We believe that our leadership in the use of non-animal alternatives in product safety evaluation has helped in contributing to the science of animal alternatives, and to our reputation as a highly regarded corporate citizen."
Avon has devoted extensive professional, technological and financial resources to the science and use of non-animal alternatives for product safety evaluation. Of particular note: In 1989, Avon was the first major U.S. cosmetics company to announce a permanent ban on animal testing. In addition, the company was one of the first to open an in- house cell culture facility dedicated to the development of in vitro alternatives to animal tests; the first to develop and utilize a comprehensive computerized historical safety data base as part of a product safety and evaluation process; and completed the largest evaluation of an in vitro alternative published to date.

Avon markets its products to women in more than 100 countries through 1.7 million independent representatives.
