AVON LAUNCHES MULTI-YEAR BREAST CANCER AWARENESS CRUSADE

Over 415,000 U.S. Representatives Will Raise
Money and Awareness for Early Detection in Grassroots Program
Innovative Program Merges Marketing and Philanthropy
in Support of Corporate Mission To Serve Women's Needs
NEW YORK, Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Avon Products, Inc. (NYSE: AVP), has announced the launch of "Avon's Breast Cancer Awareness Crusade," a multi-year, national campaign to promote breast cancer education and access to early detection.
This grassroots program is dedicated to educating women about breast cancer, and providing more women -- especially low-income, minority and older women -- with access to early detection services.
"Our goal is to do everything we can to reduce the human cost of the breast cancer epidemic," says James E. Preston, Avon's chairman and chief executive officer. "Avon has pledged to take a leadership role in developing alliances and programs which make education and access to breast cancer early detection a reality for all women."
"Avon's Breast Cancer Awareness Crusade" focuses on delivering education and early detection services to women in communities across the United States with the support of more than 415,000 Avon Representatives as co-hosts of educational programs and deliverers of empowering information about the availability of early detection services.
A key component of Avon's multi-year program is the Breast Cancer Awareness Pin, which will go on sale in October during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The pin interprets the pink ribbon motif selected by the breast cancer community as the international symbol of hope and support for those affected by the disease.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer for women in America and is the leading cause of cancer death for women between the ages of 35 and 54, according to the National Cancer Institute. Likewise, Avon's proprietary research reveals that breast cancer is the primary health-related concern among women of all age, ethnic and socio- economic groups across the country.
Avon's Breast Cancer Awareness Pin, available in two sizes, will sell for $2. All profits will go to education and early detection programs developed by Avon in association with the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations (NABCO), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the YWCA of the U.S.A. and other organizations.
"As a consumer-oriented company with a unique grassroots sales organization, Avon will be able to build bridges of understanding and compassion in every neighborhood and community in America," Preston continues. "We would like to see the day when lack of money, transportation, day care, knowledge or even just plain fear of detection will no longer prevent women from seeking proper early detection screening and follow-up."
In addition to its 415,000 U.S. Representatives, Avon's 9,000 employees across the country will sell the Breast Cancer Awareness pin.
Avon is the world's leading direct seller and marketer of beauty and related products with $3.8 billion in annual revenues.
