 MIAMI, July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Avon Products, Inc. and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced today that South Florida has been selected as the first region for the expansion of the Women of Enterprise Awards program. The Women of Enterprise Awards, now in its seventh year, has become one of the nation's most coveted recognitions for women entrepreneurs.
 The award is presented annually to five extraordinary women entrepreneurs who have triumphed over personal or professional challenges. The regional program, which will honor four local women in November, will enable more women to be recognized.
 "South Florida is the ideal site for the expansion of the program. In our multi-ethnic community, we have many women who have beaten the odds and gone on to become successful entrepreneurs, they deserve recognition," said Marie Rodriguez, director of Sales for Avon's Gold Coast Division.
 According to Rodriguez, Avon's commitment to women began 34 years before women earned the right to vote in this country. The Women of Enterprise Awards was a natural for a company that provided the means for women to become financially independent at a time when they were expected to remain at home.
 Nomination of qualified candidates can be submitted by women's organizations or by individuals. To be considered for the South Florida 1993 Women of Enterprise Awards, candidates must have:
 -- been profitably self-employed for at least three years;
 -- established a business in the face of significant personal or
 economic challenges;
 -- demonstrated qualities that make her an outstanding role model
 for other women;
 -- shown an ability to communicate her expertise effectively through
 media interviews and personal speaking engagements.
 Nomination forms can be picked up at the Avon Sales Center located at 3050 N.W. 7th St., Miami, FL 33125 or requested by calling 305-541-0073 or 305-444-5678. Nominations must be received by Friday, Aug. 6.
 The four winners will be honored at a luncheon to be held Nov. 16 at the InterContinental Hotel in Downtown Miami.
 In 1987, Avon and the U.S. Small Business Association joined efforts to salute the spirit and determination of America's 4.5 million women business owners by establishing the Women of Enterprise Awards program. The program recognizes the significant contributions of women-owned businesses to the nation's economy. Today, nearly one-third of the nation's small businesses are owned by women and those businesses provided more jobs in 1992 than all the Fortune 500 companies combined.
