AVIS IS RENTING "INTELLIGENT CARS" AT SAN JOSE AIRPORT
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Avis has begun renting at

the airport here five test Oldsmobile Toronados that are specially equipped with an in-vehicle, computer-driven navigation system that makes it easier for renters to find their way in what may be unfamiliar territory.
Developed by the Zexel Corp. and called NAVMATE, the system involves a computer programmed with Bay Area travel data, a video screen mounted in the control panel and positioning sensors that use both satellite global positioning and magnetic "dead reckoning" to track the car as it travels.
"Avis is a pioneer in the application of technology to the rental car industry," said Kerry Morris, West Coast zone manager for Avis. "Our Wizard computer-driven reservations system went on-line in real time 20 years ago this month, and through the years we have constantly updated it. Our program with Zexel in this in-car navigation system is just another example of how we try to put advanced technology to work for the benefit of the traveler."
The Navmate system rapidly generates optimum routes to any selected destination simply by entering into the in-car computer a street address. The driver can also select form the menu point of interest in the area and select one to visit. Route guidance presents real-time icon instructions to the driver on the video screen. In addition to the screen instructions, and audio chime signals proximity to the next turn or arrival at destination.
The easy-to-use controls are built into the car's information center, making them convenient to reach. The system is designed for simplicity and with a short demonstration by an Avis representative can get the driver on the road.
Avis, the largest employee-owned company in the rent a car industry, is also participating in a similar navigation test in Orlando, Fla., in cooperation with the American Automobile Association, General Motors, the federal highway administration, the Florida Department of Transportation and the City of Orlando.
The Navmate-equipped cars may be reserved for rental by telephoning Avis at the San Jose Airport, 408-993-2353.
